Congratulations to Associates in Women’s Care for achieving re-accreditation with the AIUM! Wow!
I know this accomplishment is very meaningful to you (my hubby managed to raise an eyebrow and pat me on the shoulder when I shared the news). Re-accredi-what, you ask?
Ok, AIUM accreditation might not be obviously amazing to you. But since it means a lot to our practice, aka, “Jenny spent the last 6 months of her life working on this,” and my docs spent a lot of their time and money on continued education, let me explain so you can fully appreciate the awesomeness that is AIUM accreditation.
1) NOT ALL OB OFFICES ARE ACREDITED. No, it’s not a requirement, no not everyone has it. Don’t believe me? Click here for the list of accredited OB practices.
Any yahoo with a machine can do ultrasound (ie Tom Cruise). Ultrasound in private practice is basically unregulated. But we here at Associates in Women’s Care want to prove that we are not just probe-waving yahoos who scanned your baby. So we invited a regulating board to review our policies, practices, and images to ensure we are providing our patients with high quality ultrasound. In order to attain accreditation, the doctors and sonographers must be properly trained, certified, submit case studies, continue ultrasound education, and adhere to strict guidelines. Accredited practices must re-accredit every 3 years to maintain their certification. AWC earned its initial accreditation in 2012, and is now re-accredited through 2018.
2) AIU-who? AIUM stands for the “American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.” They are a nationally recognized board for excellence in ultrasound. They are THE accrediting board in ultrasound for OB private practice. For more info visit www.aium.org.
So, once again, congratulations to AWC for their continued commitment to excellence in ultrasound by re-accrediting with the AIUM! Stop by the ultrasound room any time to admire the fancy hard-earned certificate hanging on my wall!
